Anika, the genius…

That’s right, folks. According to our pediatrician, Anika is going to be an “incredibly bright child.” I always assumed this to be the truth, up until we began our potty-training saga. She still refuses to sit on the potty. But believe it or not, it is this exact situation that led the doctor to tell me that she is probably just really smart! According to Dr. Reis, kids that are incredibly intelligent actually take a long time to potty-train. Why, you may ask? Because they are stubborn and independent. Uh…yeah! That’s what I’ve been saying all this time! Anika is way too stubborn and independent! Well, I guess I should stop complaining, because apparently these are good things. Way to go, you smart little girl. Now please, just sit on the potty!!! The genius thing gives me some comfort, but not enough for me to want to change your diaper for the next ten years…

  2. Was their any question she was going to be a smarty pants, look at her parents! Hopefully it won't be ten more years of diaper changing. I'm so excited you are coming to Salt Lake. I should be really pregnant then since my due date is April 25th! It would be so great to see you.

  3. Don't sweat it--I guarantee she will be trained by the time she starts kindergarten! Maybe some fancy "big girl" panties with lace and ribbons will do the trick.

  4. It's Stacey :)
Sorry to hear the potty video didn't help :) That's so funny Anika asked about Elmo's mommy! Anika will do things when she's good and ready. I bet once she decides to do it, there's no going back, no accidents, no nighttime bed wetting. She's always been a smart cookie and will be a potty champ when she's good and ready :)

We miss you guys! Hope you're all well!

  5. i've totally been reading the same thing! i have been reading lots about potty training to see if i want to start with cam (seriously can't get myself motivated) and then i talk to the dr to ask if it was bad i didn't start at 2 and he said he actually recommends not potty training. you should just let them start when they are ready to start. he said you don't have to do anything they'll just let you know when they are ready...the "smart" kids will actually resist when you try to push. interesting. anyway, good luck and keep us posted. we plan on just putting it in cam's hands but i agree, how far do you let that go?

  6. Ha! Looks like you and me both are going to have a rough couple of years with these "smart" kids. I guess that's a good thing...

  7. What a cute blog Angell! I love to see all you guys are up to. As for the genius, good luck! You were such a smart and independent girl, I have a feeling it runs in the family. Potty train is tough...but now, almost a year later, he can go and do EVERYTHING by himself. She will be like that someday, and it will be wonderful!!! I know how you feel though...

  8. Ugh, potty training. Good luck! I'm sure it will all work out when she is ready. It turns out that cool "big girl panties" and lots of capri sun drinks did the trick for us! Yes, my child can be bribed!
